If you are like most people, at some point in your life you will be driving, look into your rearview mirror and see flashing lights.

Below are some tips for the steps to take when you get pulled over:

Stay Calm and Cooperative
It won’t do you any good to become irate or act rudely to the officer. All this will accomplish is to anger the officer and make the situation worse. Comply with any reasonable request made of the officer and keep your answers truthful.

Keep Your Hands on the Wheel and Don’t Make any Sudden Movements
When the officer pulls you over it is important to understand that they don’t know what they’re getting into. A sudden move on your part to grab your registration can be seen as a move to hide something or even obtain a weapon.  To avoid any confusion or stress on either side, put your vehicle in park, keep your hands visible at all times, and wait until the officer is at your window and in full sight of the situation before taking further action.

Understand Your Rights
The same standards apply even in a simple traffic stop. As with any legal proceeding, you have the right to remain silent and to contact an attorney. From the moment you ask for an attorney, make no more statements without your legal counsel present.

Answer the Ticket in a Timely Manner
A timely answer to a ticket can result in a different outcome of a case. There are different steps that can be taken early on in a traffic violation that can prove valuable at the actual trial date. An attorney can discuss with you the steps that should be taken in preparation for the trial date.

Know The Process
You don’t want to go into any situation blindly – let alone a legal proceeding. The laws, even those governing traffic, are complex. Having a qualified attorney assist in the process can provide ease of mind and a thorough defense of your case. And if you don’t live in the area where you received the ticket, our attorneys will attend court on your behalf.

Our experienced criminal defense attorneys are familiar with the laws related to traffic and speeding violations. We are available to attend court on your behalf and will fight aggressively to find the best possible solution for your situation.
